Mahale Mountains National Park sits along the shoreside of the spectacular Lake Tanganyika in the western area of Tanzania. A spectacular haven for wildlife encompassing the Mahale Mountain range, the shores of the lake and rainforest as well, it is a haven of unspoilt ecosystems you see nature at its most extreme, far removed from human impact.
The Mahale Mountains National Park is little known and quite unusual, without a doubt it’s worth the visit, the journey can be a little lengthy and cost a little more than your traditional safari, but is worth persevering for. Home to approximately 1,000 chimpanzees, these are the stars of the show and due to the remote location the chimpanzees are left in relative peace and are thriving, a chimpanzee trek is a very rewarding experience in the Mahale.
It’s not just the chimpanzees that are worth the visit, with Tanzania’s highest concentration of primates, seek out the yellow baboons, red colobus, the blue and red tailed vervet monkeys as well.
The vivid blue waters of Lake Tanganyika are vibrant and teeming with marine life, there are many species of fish, as well as crocodiles and hippopotamus, try your hand at kayaking, snorkelling or just drink in the view as the sun sets over the mountains of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the distance.
