A resort popular with snowboarders and skiers alike, the British, Dutch and Germans flock annually to make the most of all that Mayrhofen has to offer, a resort which can be found ideally just an hour away from Innsbruck and two hours from Salzburg. Set at 633 metres, whilst Mayrhofen does not have altitude on its side, do not dismay, it’s a quick journey on the efficient lift system and your day will be spent skiing between heights of 1,500m – 2,500m.
With a ski area covering 139 kilometres, there are plenty of pistes to entertain across Mayrhofen especially when you consider that the Zillertal lift pass covers 530 kilometres of pistes to bolster Mayrhofen’s pistes accessible by bus. Even the most discerning of skiers will find Mayrhofen hard to dismiss as an excellent choice. Ideally suited to intermediates, but also offering good nursery slopes for beginners in areas such as on Ahorn mountain and the Harakiri piste. Maryhofen is also home to Austria’s steepest ski run, 2 kilometres in length with pitches of 78 degrees, excellent for advanced skiiers.
Mayrhofen is a resort that is excellent for snowboarders and freeskiers with the Penken Park known as one of the best terrain parks in the Alps and if you want to see how you faired on the kickers and boxes then there are two pro photoshoots per week. New for December 2018, the Möslbahn opened a link between the Penken mountain and the village of Mösl, further enhancing the ski area.
Non-skiers can enjoy many activities including; the thrill of riding down the mountain by one or two seater toboggans, sleigh rides and ice skating as well as the lively party atmosphere which Mayrhofen provides. Brück ‘n’ Stadl is a popular party spot, kicking off from 3pm daily and running through until 2am, après ski blends into night with DJ and Europop offerings. Ice Bar is a boisterous après ski haunt situated right by the Penken gondola, perfect for a couple of lively hours in the mid-afternoon after coming off the mountain. For evening entertainment, Arena Club found in the Sporthotel Strass is a brilliant option and has previously played host to an enviable list of international acts and artists through the years.
When the sun comes out, head up the Penken gondola to the Penken Panorama restaurant which affords incredible mountain vistas and a warm and relaxed atmosphere. In resort the restaurant Pane e Vino da Michele offers utterly delicious mediterranean and Italian influenced cuisine at fair prices.
Mayrhofen can sometimes be overlooked in part due to its altitude, but with the mountain terrain at respectable heights, skiing for everyone and a fun party atmosphere it can rub shoulders with the likes of St. Anton and Ischgl.
