Forming part of the Western Safari Circuit, Katavi National Park covers an area 4,471 km², sitting in a remote location in the far west of Tanzania, nigh on impossible to reach by road (or realistically a full day’s drive), Katavi offers a fly-in safari experience.
As it is off the beaten track for many tourists it means that it is one of Tanzania’s best kept secrets; quiet and undisturbed with a wealth of wildlife to discover, the journey may take a little longer but the rewards more than make up for it.
The safari experience of Katavi is wild and raw, a new experience for even the most honed safari specialists, Katavi’s wildlife often can be viewed in the thousands, with congregations of buffalo and herds of tens if not hundreds of elephants congregating can be seen wandering the plains.
Towards the end of the dry season, as other water sources begin to dry up, leading to high numbers of hippopotamuses, crocodiles and other animals congregating in one place meaning that your guide can find these gatherings with relative ease. Your guide can show you numerous hippopotamuses and crocodiles as well as other animals coming to water. The rawness of the park and the harmony of the animals at the restricted water sources is a sight to behold, aim for August to October to see this phenomenon play out.
