Whilst Victoria Falls may not be the highest (108 metres) or the widest (1,708 metres), it’s a combination of the two which make the world’s largest falling sheet of water, where the entire volume of the Zambezi River plummets into the First Gorge causing spray of up to 800 metres in height, it is one of the most impressive examples of raw natural power on the globe.
Victoria Falls can be accessed from both the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides, the Smoke that Thunders is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and has many vantage points from which to take in the sights and feel the spray of the powerful Zambezi cascading over 100 metres.
It used to be a tricky decision, Zambia or Zimbabwe, a hotly debated topic as to which side offered the best views and experience of the falls, but thanks to an all-encompassing visa the decision no longer has to be debated, you can choose both. Cross the Victoria Falls Bridge which connects the two and shift perspective from the vast extensive view from the Zimbabwean side to the up and personal view from Zambia, both offer a different experience.
For the daredevils there is plenty to excite and entertain and not just the rush of thousands of cubic metres of water cascading in the background. The Victoria Falls Bridge offers the brave, or foolhardy, the opportunity to bungee jump towards the river below, dropping over 100m. White-water raft through the rapids below the falls, swim in ‘Devil’s Pool’ above the falls, horseback safari or take a more leisurely river cruise, it’s not just the Falls which offer excitement for your trip.
