Nyungwe is an incredible rainforest, home to hundreds of species and a real treat for all who visit, it is vast, impressive and unspoilt. Located in the southwest of Rwanda, the Nyungwe sits bordering the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Lake Kivu to the west and Burundi where it extends into the Kibira National Park to the south.
Nyungwe is rich in primate species, with the park being home to 13 different species from the Golden monkey to the Olive baboon, the park houses 25% of Africa’s primate species! Covering just short of 1,000 kilometres squared the forest is comprised of rainforest, bamboo, swamps, bogs and grasslands, with heights reaching up to 3,000 metres.
There are plentiful hiking trails throughout the Nyungwe Forest where you can explore the ancient rainforest and track golden monkeys discovering the enchanting flora and fauna of Nyungwe. Don’t forget to pack your rain jacket, after enjoying the warm sunny shores of Lake Kivu or the vibrant city of Kigali, some forget that Nyungwe is first and foremost a rainforest.
