The Luangwa Valley is teeming with life, within the valley you will find three National Parks: Luambe National Park, North Luangwa Valley National Park and South Luangwa Valley National Park. A huge abundance of game is found within the Luangwa with endemic species like Thornicroft Giraffe calling the Luangwa home and a shifting landscape with the seasons providing dramatic scenery to revel in.
The Luangwa Valley is located at the southern end of the Great Ridge Valley with the Muchinga Mountain Range forming a natural barrier to the valley in the west and escarpments forming the border in the east. The valley floor finds the Luangwa River carving its path through the middle, leaving lagoons in its wake creating lush rich river forest environments which are the centre of activity and life.
The Muyamadzi Corridor separates the North and South Luangwa Valley National Parks, each offering a different habitat with different flora and fauna to be found in each. In the South Luangwa Park the Luangwa River area teems with hippopotamus, crocodile, elephant and cape buffalo, whilst over 400 species of bird can be found throughout the park. One of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries on the planet, the park is much more well established and setup that its northern counterpart.
The North Luangwa Valley National Park is home to black rhinos, successfully reintroduced in 2003, a very hospitable habitat, the reintroduction has been a success and the park can support a healthy number of rhinos. Less trodden and visited the quieter North Park has a more fixed focus on safari on foot as opposed to by 4×4 with an emphasis on a genuine up close and personal safari experience.
